Bangladesh Creates SoNG MPA

On October 27th, 2014, the "Swatch of No Ground Marine Protected Area" (SoNG MPA) was signed into law by the Government of Bangladesh's Ministry of Environment and Forest. This means that fishing and other unauthorized commercial offshore activities are now restricted in the SoNG MPA.

The park spans 1,738 square km with depths reaching 900 m, and contains the beginning of a submarine canyon, which it is named after. The MPA includes habitat for spawning and breeding of several endangered species of dolphins, whales, porpoises, and sharks from  the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean.

The protected sharks include species of hammerhead, blue, whale, tiger, and sawfish.
