In response to seven fatal shark attacks in the past three years Western Australia's government implemented a controversial shark cull which resulted in the death of 68 sharks, from January to April of this year.
WA's government wanted to continue the program for an additional 3 years. Fortunately for the sharks, the Environmental Protection Agency rejected the trial on the basis that there is too much scientific uncertainty about the effect on the great white shark population. The EPA instead supports research into shark behavior and implementation of non-lethal alternatives. WA's government says that it accepts the EPA's decision and does not plan on appealing the decision.
