Australia's Federal Government called for a full environmental assessment of the Western Australian Government's shark cull.

In order for the WA government's shark management measures to continue past April (the original end date) the Federal Minister for Environment has called for a full assessment of WA's shark hazard management plan under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Federal Government has committed $379,000 for research into the white shark population to better understand white shark movements, juvenile and nursery aggregations and population trends. However, the Environmental Protection Authority has announced that it will not assess WA's drum line program. EPA chairman, Paul Vogel, states that the EPA deems the environmental impact of the WA's shark management measures to be "negligible" due to its limited duration, and small scale operation.
